Summary edit

Description
English: This week’s image is of Toll Gavel from the east, with the East Yorkshire Yeomanry in procession circa. 1910.

Walkergate is off to the right in the picture and on the left is J.W.Skelton & Confectioners, displaying an advert on the glass window for ‘Fry’s Chocolate’.
People are viewing the procession from their windows above the shops. Just before the sweet shop there is an overhead sign which reads ‘Bon Marche.’ Today this high street clothing chain still trades in town but is located further along at 61 Toll Gavel.
The Regiment was formed in 1902, by the Government, following the Boer War (1899-1902). They decided to raise several additional Regiments of Yeomanry and Lord Wenlock was appointed Colonel, which resulted in the Regiment becoming known locally as ‘Wenlock’s Horse’. The first headquarters and barracks were at Walton Street, Hull, which were used for administration and training, and the Beverley headquarters were based at Railway Street. Drill stations were located at North Cave, Hornsea and Patrington.
