WAREHAM, MASSACHUSETTS THE only official correspondence between the Warehams of old Englandand New England took place in 1879 at the time of the bi-centennial ofRochester, now part of our Wareham, when Hon. Thomas Lean Skewesof the English town wrote to our town. There is no question but that the CapeCod town, Uke many others nearby, was named after the old town in DorsetCounty, England, which is a quaint, sleepy village of about two thousand inhabit-ants, dating back to the time when the Romans held possession of England. The town is very tranquil, as another picture on thefollowing page shows, and all that remains of the ancient days are the huge earth-works of Roman construction which almost surround the town. There is alsoevidence that the place was a British camp even before the Romans landed onEnglish soil and fortified the place. The eastern part of Wareham, on Cape Cod, was known to the Indians as Aga-wam and was sold to the Plymouth colony in 1655, which some years later resoldit to Joseph Warren, WilUam Clark, Joseph Bartlett, Josiah Morton, Isaac Littleand Seth Pope. The western part belonged to Rochester, and in the year 1739both tracts of land were incorporated under the name of Wareham.
