Constantine theGreat was proclaimed Emperorin 306 by the Roman Legionthen stationed there. There,also, was held the great slavemarket where many a maid andlad were sold in the Roman daysto be conveyed to Rome. In mediaeval days, the placebecame the scene of strugglesbetween Britons, Saxons andDanes. There is a tradition thatthe famous King Arthur, afterdefeating ninety thousandSaxons on Baden hills, took uphis residence in York and withthe chivalrous knights and fairladies of his Court celebratedthe first Christmas festival everheld in England. In these daysYork was surrounded by deepforests and no one dared leavethe city without an armed guard on account of the bandits and robbers whoinfested the outlying regions.
