Summary edit

Description
English: A young man peddles his self-propelled toy tractor during the "tractor pull" -- part of the Independence Day celebrations in Arnegard, North Dakota.

The children's tractor pull is a game in which kids of the same age compete against one another to pull a weight. The weight is loaded onto an inclined plane, and then pulled by the toy tractor. As the machine moves forward, the weight is pulled higher on the incline, forcing the child to work harder to peddle. A "full pull" occurs when the weight reaches the top. Whoever gets the tractor the farthest wins the "tractor pull". Sometimes, run-offs are needed (during which a bigger weight is pulled).

The "tractor pulls" are a highlight of the Independence Day celebrations in Arnegard. More than half the town's population watches for about three hours as the kids have fun.

Arnegard was founded in 1906 and is named for Evan Arnegard, the first homesteader in the area. The town was incorporated in 1913 when the Great Northern Rail Road extended its line past Watford City to Arnegard.

Arnegard has never been big. The town was founded with about 100 people living there, and it reached its peak population of 254 souls in 1930. By 1990, the population was 122, and by 2000 it was just 105. Arnegard has seen a small uptick in population due to the 1990s oil boom (which is continuing). The U.S. Census estimates that the town had 135 residents as of 2012.
