Description
English: JCB Fastrac tractor with cultivator near to Fulmodeston, Norfolk, Great Britain. – Contractors were working in this large field with four powerful new JCB tractors and state of the art cultivators and drills planting carrots (F1 Nairobi, if you are really interested). I talked to one of the drivers who said he was working 7 days a week, 5.30am–7.30pm, with a 1 hour 40 minute journey home at the end of the day. He told me that preparing the seedbed for carrots is even more demanding than that for potatoes: plough, harrow and de-stone, fertilize, cultivate, drill. – The tractor in this picture is about to cultivate the fertilized soil (hence its frosty colour) into three separate 2 metre wide seedbeds, eighteen inches deep. The drill follows but my man was waiting for the tilth to haze (dry out) before he drilled (again three bed each run). – The carrots will be ready to lift late autumn to Christmas.
