Summary edit

Description 1874 photograph of Charing Cross, looking down The Strand (left). At left centre is Northumberland House, without the Percy Lion which perched on the pediment for 125 years and was removed to Syon House on 2 July 1874 (see plaque at Syon House File:Percy Lion plaque.jpg), the year the house was demolished. To the bottom right is the top of Whitehall but at this time known as Charing Cross. In the foreground is the Le Sueur equestrian statue of King Charles I which has been on the same spot since 1675. Note: Love this pic - not sure where it came from. Northumberland House, the last of the Strand aristocratic houses (demolished because of Bazalgette’s sewer construction and for the construction of Northumberland Avenue) is to the left of King Charles I and there appears to be a factory (Coles’s) to the right. Not much traffic.
