Le tramway de la côte Dinan

« À la fin du XIXe siècle, on veut joindre par tramway le marché Champlain et le Château Frontenac. Cependant, à cette époque, peu de côtes relient la basse-ville et le Vieux-Québec. La côte de la Montagne, les côtes de la Canoterie et Dambourges de même que la côte du Palais sont toutes trop abruptes pour que les tramways puissent y circuler. C’est pourquoi, en 1897, on construit un viaduc, à la pente assez douce, entre la rue Saint-Paul et la côte du Palais. Celui-ci est supporté par des chevalets en acier. En 1948, avec la disparition des tramways, ce plan incliné est réaménagé pour permettre le passage des véhicules automobiles : c’est l’actuelle côte Dinan. À partir de la basse-ville, on aperçoit toujours les piliers de béton qui la supportent et qui ont remplacé les chevalets d’origine. Cette photographie nous montre le tramway arrivant au sommet du viaduc et s’apprêtant à tourner à gauche, sur la section plus douce de la côte du Palais. » – Jean-François Caron
