Description

Massive traffic jams on the I-15 during my return from Las Vegas to Los Angeles led me to take a detour in the Victorville area; this put me right in the area of Southern California Logistics Airport, formerly George Air Force Base.

The silver Hyundai Genesis in front is my current travel companion. Despite being a "mere" car, it had previously taken me on a trip that is better done by air - to Denver and the Colorado Rockies - and may do a few more.

Here at Southern California Logistics Airport, where retired airliners are stored and scrapped, I am visiting one of my past travel companions. The leftmost aircraft, City of Chicago, was the first Boeing 767 to enter revenue service in 1982. It had flown for my favorite airline, United, for its entire service life, and it had served me during a few of my 1990s flights between New York and Los Angeles, and later in 2003, the first leg of my journey from Los Angeles to London via New York.

It's not often that I get to have my travel companions have "meetings" like this, especially when they serve different travel modes. And I hope that in the near future, I can get the Genesis to make a run I used to make with City of Chicago - all the way to New York.
