they weretaken to Honolulu. Taking therefore into consideration the prevalenceof trade-winds blowing towards America, and thepeculiar conditions of architectural and astronomicalintelligence possessed by the Mexican Indians, thereare certain inferences which may be accepted. It isnot improbable that men belonging to EurojDean,Moorish, or Asiatic races arrived in CentralAmerica during a period between the sixth andeleventh centuries. There is not sufficient evidenceto determine in what manner this may havehappened ; but after giving due weight to the state-ments of the Indian priests and caciques, and thetraditions of the circumstances under which theirknowledge was introduced into Mexico, together withthe adoption of monastic institutions, and the systemsof education, it is reasonable to conjecture that thecomparative civilisation of the Toltecs and Aztecswas originally caused by the influence and instructionof strangers who came to their land in vessels whichhad crossed the Atlantic.
