r of rods(Köllilcer) from the outer stratum of the secondary ocular vesicle, while all the other layersproceed from the inner lamelloe of this fetal formation. 1. The nervous elements appear quite different in the different layers of theretina. They are divided into mosaic layers (which are intimately connected withthe specific irritation of the sense of vision), and proper nervous layers, whoseelements correspond with those occurring in all parts of the brain. (Hcnle.) Hencethe strata in question may be compared to a flat expansion of cerebral ganglion(Köllilcer), and the rather so, as they originally represent a portion of the cerebralsubstance, and are only subsequently separated from it by parts being pushed inbetween, and later exist independently. Between the pavement, and the nervouslayers proper, is the external fibrous layer. (Intergranular layer, d, Fig. 28, afterH. Müller.) ANATOMY OF THE RETINA. 129 Fig. 28. The purely nervous layers, counting from within outward, are the nerve-filamentlayer, a h, which in the flattened cerebral ganglion represents the white substance;also the layer of ganglion cells (inner ganglion layer, 5), the inner filamentary layer(granular layer, c), the granular cell layer (internal granular or external ganglionlayer, e), which together represent the gray substance of the cerebral ganglion. Thegranular layer (external granular, f) and the layer of rods, g (bacillar), which areseparated by the external limitans, Z, belong to the mosaic layers. The nerve filaments of the retina, analagous to the filaments of the brain, are transparent andhomogeneous. By some they are regarded as simply axis cylinde
