Title
Trevelyan button (crest)
Description
English: Copper alloy livery button of the Trevelyan family of Perranuthnoe, with the coat of arms in a square shield surmounted by a pair of armoured arms and flanked either side with a dolphin. The motto of the family, TYME TRYETH TROTH ('time tests faith'), runs along a banner underneath the shield. The soldered central loop on the back of the button is surrounded by the backmark: FIRMIN & SONS LD, STRAND, LONDON, within a circular border. This firm was making buttons from 1763-1964, but this particular backmark suggests that the button dates from c.1875-1894.
