Both are in Broadstreet, but two blocks south of where the car is boarded, one aquaint and ancient church to the left, the other a business buildingto the right, three doors below the corner of William street. Thelatter is the site of the old Presbyterian parsonage, Aaron Burrsbirthplace ; the former Newarks famous old First PresbyterianChurch. The plot of ground marked by the church is the spot, literally,where New Jersey began. Driven out of Connecticut by religiousoppression a handful of Blue Presbyterian Yankees from the townof Milford settled here in 1666, upon the invitation of Sir GeorgeCarteret. New Jersey did not exist until they came. The townthey founded on theedge of the meadow,NEW ARK accordingto one tradition, wasfor many a long yearonly this congregation.Cleverly did these free-men and burgessesmanage. The churchmembers made up thetown meeting, andthe pastor was byfar the most important Official. SOUTH ORANGE GOLF CLUB HOUSE—NEW JERSEY.

The edifice ofto day is the secondchurch (enlarged); itscornerstone laid in 1787.It was first worshippedin 111 years ago. Itsearly ministers all be-came very noted men.Abraham Pierson, itssecond pastor, was after-wards President of YaleCollege. Another of itsdivines, the Rev. AaronBurr, father of AaronBurr, the statesman,went from this pulpitto found Princeton College (in Elizabeth), latermoving it to its presentsite. Dr. Edward DorrGriffin became Presidentof Williams and Dr.James Richards Presi-dent of Auburn Theo-logical Seminary. If the traveler canspare the time it w^ill befar better for him to ex-plore for half an hourabout the Broad andMarket Street junction.Much more than half anhour, indeed, might beprofitably spent. This isthe old Four Corners1of Newark, dating fromthe earliest days of thetown. The old churchand graveyard by them-selves are worth more than a casual inspection, and
