English: Houses by the river, probably the plantation 'Johanna Katharina'
Nederlands: Aquarel. Deze waterverfschildering toont een beeld van het leven van de plantageeigenaren in Suriname. In het midden staat het grote landhuis, en rechtsvoor op het water vaart een zogenaamde tentboot, het vervoermiddel van de rijke kolonialen in die tijd. Het gaat vermoedelijk om de plantage Johanna Katharina, een suikerplantage aan de Beneden-Saramacca rivier. De plantage grensde aan de kostgrond Voorzorg en stroomafwaarts aan koffieplantage de Morgenster. Ten tijde van de afschaffing van de slavernij woonden er 148 slaven op de plantage. Eigenaresse was Elisa Desiree Pepin, echtgenote van C.M. Calombet (hij woonde te Parijs).. Huizen aan een rivier, vermoedelijk plantage 'Johanna Katharina' |
