| Description |
English: Catherine Palace was built in 1752-1756 by Empress Elizabeth. It was named in honor of her mother, Empress Catherine I, who had built a smaller palace on the site. It is 325 m (1,066 ft) long - which may not count additions. After the Revolution, the Soviet regime renamed the city Pushkin, for the 19th century author and poet.
The name mean's "Tsar's village." It was mainly a summer palace for almost 150 years. Tsar Nicholas II made Tsarskoe Selo his main residence after the uprisings in 1905. The black-yellow-white flag at the upper left is a variant of a Russian Empire flag that was used for a few decades from 1858. A white-blue-red flag replaced it in the last years of the monarchy. It was restored as the flag of the Russian Federation after the collapse of the USSR (see detail photo of the Winter Palace). |
