Title |
English: Turntable and roundhouse at the Pacific Coast Coal Company bunkers, Seattle, 1911 |

Description |
English: When a train gets to the end of its track, the engine has to be turned around. This is done by driving the engine onto a turntable, and then turning it in the right direction. When not in use, locomotives were housed in roundhouses. This photo shows the turntable and roundhouse at the Pacific Coast Coal Company's waterfront storage bunkers on Railroad Avenue South, near where Safeco Field now stands. The turntable was rotated by hand. The cleats around the edge kept the workman's feet from slipping while he pushed. The roundhouse, which was built around the turntable, is in the background. Handwritten on sleeve: Pac Coast Coal (bunkers), 1911. Caption by MOHAI staff.
