The field has been ploughed in the past for maize production, as evidenced by the traces of furrows. The field is also invaded by the sturdy pioneer karroid shrub Seriphium plumosum L., which along with termite infestation (Trinervitermes trinervoides) will persist for at least decades afterwards. The original productivity of highveld grassland is never restored after ploughing, and remains in a perpetually degraded state, especially in terms of botanical and insect diversity.
