editDescriptionTwo communities reunited via ancient ferry crossing - geograph.org.uk - 1727549.jpg |
English: Two communities reunited via ancient ferry crossing. What a great way to celebrate the millennium - Ferries have crossed the Severn near this point between Newnham and Arlingham since Roman times, but the last boatman gave up in 1947. However, in the year 2000 Arlingham and Newnham-on-Severn were linked once again by ferry. Two Army hovercraft were used.
Text reads: NEWNHAM ON SEVERN PASSAGE 2000. This sculpture Millennium Marker is based on a "Chale Block" and commemorates the history of the Lower Severn. PASSAGE 2000, a community event revived the ancient ferry crossing by kind participation of the Assault Squadron Royal Marines 539 and two hovercraft. Three thousand people were ferried across to enjoy festivities in Arlingham and Newnham on June 10th and 11th. Funds for charity and this marker were raised thus linking two communities again.
