Description After blasting over the Northern Mariana Islands, Typhoon Songda continued its course westward towards Japan. This image of the storm was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on September 2, 2004, at 01:25 UTC. At that time, the storm had winds of 204 kilometers per hour (127 mph) with gusts to 250 kilometers per hour (155 mph). The typhoon was expected to move over southern Japan before heading towards South Korea. “Songda” was named after a river in Vietnam.
