Larry Vasquez, commanding officer of Naval Base Ventura County, helps hold a wreath during a ceremony honoring the Battle of Midway at Naval Base Ventura County, Calif., June 4, 2013. The Battle of Midway, fought June 47, 1942, is considered the turning point in the Allied war against Japan in the Pacific theater during World War II. The Japanese plan to occupy the Midway Atoll was thwarted by U.S. forces. Japan lost four aircraft carriers during the battle; the USS Yorktown (CV 5) was also sunk. |
