Català: L’estany de Montcortès és tota una descoberta per als amants de la natura. Encara més quan ens assabentem que es tracta d’un dels pocs estanys del país d’origen càrstic, no glacial. Això vol dir que les seves aigües provenen d’una font interna, com en el cas de Banyoles. Té una fondària màxima de trenta metres i l’entrada d’aigua és subterrània, ja que no hi ha cap riu que l’alimenti.
English: The lake is a real discovery Montcortès for nature lovers. Even more when we learn that it is one of the few karst lakes in the country, no ice. This means that the water comes from an internal source, as in the case of Banyoles. It has a maximum depth of thirty meters and the entrance is underground water, since there is no river that feeds it.

L'estany de Montcortès està situat al terme municipal del Baix Pallars, a la comarca del Pallars Sobirà, dins del territori de l'antic terme de Montcortès de Pallars.
És una formació d'origen càrstic; juntament amb els estanys de Basturs és l'únic d'origen no glacial dels Pirineus. Està situat a prop de Montcortès, a ponent d'aquest poble, a 1.065 m d'altitud. Té una extensió[1] de 46 hectàrees (0,46 km²). El seu perímetre, gairebé circular, és de 1.320 metres, i la fondària màxima, de 30 m. L'estany està inclòs dins el Pla d'Espais d'Interès Natural (PEIN).
