English: Volunteers with the Hire-A-Youth summer employment program sand the body of one of the Marine Corps' first four AV-8A Harriers July 2, 2009, to prepare it for repainting at the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar, Calif. Miramar's Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum plans to repaint the Hawker Siddeley-built Harrier with the original paint scheme from April 16, 1971, when it was first delivered to Marine Attack Squadron 513, then based in Beaufort, S.C., and now based in Yuma, Ariz. Restoration is expected to be completed by October, and it will be placed on display at the museum, said George Welsh, museum archivist. VMA-513 was the first Marine squadron to transition to the Harrier. After moving to Yuma in 1976, the Flying Nightmares used the plane until Jan. 21, 1986, when it was given to NASA where it was modified as an AV-8C and used to test wing design. The museum obtained the Harrier in 2008. (Photo by Gunnery Sgt. Bill Lisbon) |
