Description The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CVS-12) and the amphibious assault ship USS Princeton (LPH-5), probably at Long Beach, California (USA), circa in June 1969. Hornet, with assigned Carrier Anti-Submarine Air Group 59 (CVSG-59), was the deployed to the Pacific Ocean as recovery ship for the Apollo 11 moon mission from 27 June to 1 August 1969. The Apollo 11 crew was recovered on 24 July 1969. Note the shelter for the command module on the flight deck. Princeton had recovered Apollo 10 on 26 May 1969.
Note the two dark blue obsolescent McDonnell F-3B Demon fighters on Hornet's flight deck.
