Description

USS Houston CA-30 getting underway from pier 18 at the US Navy base at Balboa in the canal zone in this early morning photo. she was heading for the Gatun Locks so President Franklin D. Roosevelt could bid farewell to Panama's President F. H. Arosemena. President Roosevelt had attended a fleet review in San Francisco and was passing through the canal on his return to the east coast, the trip concluded at Pensacola FL on Aug 9th. ( note the Presidential flag on the aft mast ). Photo dates to the 5th of Aug, 1938
