Description

The U.S. Navy Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge (CVA-33) and the destroyer USS Floyd B. Parks (DD-884) underway in 1956.
Note: The photo appeared in the USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31) 1957 cruise book history section and shows a carrier with the pennant number "31". However, the carrier is a carrier that received the SCB-27A modernization (straight deck and hydraulic catapults). The Bon Homme Richard underwent the SCB-27C/SCB-125 modernisation from 3 March 1953 to 31 October 1955 at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard, which included an angled deck, steam catapults and a hurricane bow. She was then deployed to the Western Pacific, with assigned Carrier Air Group 21 (CVG-21), from 16 August 1956 to 28 February 1957. She was never modernised in the configuartion as the carrier depicted in the photo.

USS Floyd B. Parks (DD-884) was assigned to the Pacific Fleet and operated with Kearsarge in 1955-56. The carrier could also be USS Oriskany (CVA-34), but she did not operate the McDonnell F2H Banshee visible on deck, only Kearsarge. Kearsarge returned from her deployment on 17 May 1956 and was modernized (SCB-125) until January 1957.
