My grandfather Albert L Yates was a crew member aboard this LST-536. According to his accounts the USS LST-536 landed with the second wave of ships that landed on Normandy Beach June 6th, 1944. Albert also recollected that after they had unloaded all the tanks they were transporting another ship (filled with drunken British sailors) crashed into the 536's stern and disabled their boat. They were stranded on the beach for 3 days before they could be towed back to England. During the 3 days, he never saw a German. Later, the 536 would sail to the Pacific Theater of Operation until the surrender of Japanese Empire.
