Summary edit

Description The reverse of a diplomatic medal given out twice in 1792 to a pair of former French ambassadors to the United States, then discontinued. It was actually ordered in 1790 but not finished until early 1792. The medal was done by Augustin Dupré, a leading engraver in Paris at the time. The design is a highly original and elegant version of the obverse of the Great Seal of the United States (i.e. the U.S. coat of arms).
Date (original die); 1878 (etching).
Source Taken from plate XX (around page 115) of the archive.org American Libraries version of The Medallic History of the United States of America, 1776-1876 by Joseph Florimond Loubat, 1878.
