Summary edit

Description A skippet (container for a wax seal used on treaties) for the Masi treaty seal, made in the mid 1850s by Samuel Lewis. The design of the Masi seal is engraved on the cover and is a near-exact copy; it can be hard to tell the difference. This skippet was to be used for a treaty with the Netherlands signed by the U.S. on May 29, 1856, but never ratified by the Netherlands so it was never sent.
Date 1854-5 (skippet); photo from the 1970s.
