Summary edit

Description A skippet for the Masi treaty seal version of the Great Seal of the United States. Once, treaties were typically sealed with pendant seals (wax discs which were impressed with the seal) attached to the treaty document by a cord; skippets were containers to protect the wax disc during transport, and were usually made of silver. This skippet was for a treaty with Mexico about protection for a transitway across the Isthums of Tehuantepec signed by the U.S. on January 25, 1851, but it was never ratified by Mexico so the seal was never sent. Several skippets were made at a time, and the cover was typically engraved with the same design as the seal. This skippet was made by F. Masi & Co., the same company which made the actual treaty seal in 1825 (done by Seraphim Masi), identifiable by the stars around the rim.
