Description
English: U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, Ill., (May 9, 2003) - Training for the worst case scenario, recruits are exposed to tear gas during Chemical, Biological and Radioactive defense (CBR) training at the Fire Fighting Training Unit (FFTU) aboard RTC Great Lakes. Recruits are exposed to an atmosphere of tear gas in a controlled setting while wearing their gas mask. Under close supervision, the staff will have the students remove their masks and recite their name and social security number. This evolution teaches the recruits that the gas mask works and builds confidence in the equipment and training if they are ever exposed to weapons of mass destruction. The FFTU trains over 47,000 students annually in basic fire fighting and CBR defense. U.S. Navy photo by Chief Photographer's Mate Chris Desmond. (RELEASED)
