English: Pentagon, Arlington, VA (July 22, 2004) - Newly commissioned Lt. j.g. Jeanette Gracie Shin listens to Commander, Naval Reserve Force, Vice Adm. John Cotton, as he discusses the events of Sept. 11, 2001, following Shin's Oath of Office in the Pentagon. Shin is the first Buddhist Chaplain in the Department of Defense and first entered the military by enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1988. She served for four years and following her honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Mason University in Philosophy and Religious Studies. Later earning a Master of Arts degree in Buddhist Studies from the Graduate Theological Union/Institute of Buddhist studies located in Berkeley, California. U.S. Navy photo by Mr. Damon J.
