English: Gulf of Mexico (July 9, 2005) – Satellite image taken from the GOES-12 satellite of Hurricane Dennis. The Category 2 hurricane, on the Saffir-Simpson rating scale, with winds between 98 and 110mph, is expected to make landfall on the U.S. mainland early Sunday. Dennis lost strength as it crossed Cuba, but it started regaining steam early Saturday, with sustained winds measuring 160 kilometers (100 miles) per hour. Forecasters expected the storm to strengthen further as it moves over the warm waters of the gulf. At 1 p.m. EDT, Dennis' eye was about 355 miles south-southeast of Apalachicola in the Panhandle and about 460 miles southeast of Pascagoula, Miss. It was moving northwest at about 14 mph, forecasters said. The storm's center had passed within about 125 miles west of Key West. U.S. Navy ships have been sortied out of Naval Station Pascagoula, with evacuation ordered for all but essential personnel from Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla., ordered Friday, July 8. The Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and ends Nov. 30.
