English: Jolo, Philippines (June 7, 2006) – A U.S. Navy nurse, Lt. Tara Collins, shows local Jolo healthcare providers a new Intensive Care Unit patient monitoring system on board the U.S. Military Sealift Command (MSC) Hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19), which is deployed to South and Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands at the invitation of host nations in the region. The healthcare professionals are from the Sulu Provincial Hospital, the largest hospital facility in the Sulu Province. Radford and a group of Mercy’s Medical/Dental Civic Action Project crew have been working at Sulu Provincial the past four days, conducting medical and dental screenings and minor procedures. The medical crew on board Mercy provides general and ophthalmology surgery, basic medical evaluation and treatment, preventive medicine treatment, dental screenings and treatment, optometry screenings, eyewear distribution, public health training and veterinary services as requested by the host nations. The medical staff is augmented with an assistance crew, many of whom are part of nongovernmental organizations that have significant medical capabilities.
