English: GONAIVES, Haiti (Sept. 15, 2008) A Haitian woman leads her child through the streets of Gonaives, an area of Haiti devastated by recent hurricanes. The amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) is airlifting food and supplies to flooded areas of Gonaives where roads are inaccessible. America's contributions to the relief efforts are being coordinated by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and its Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance. Kearsarge has been diverted from the scheduled Continuing Promise 2008 humanitarian assistance deployment in the western Caribbean to conduct hurricane relief operations in Haiti.
