The Supervisor of Salvage and Diving division has sent 66,000 feet of inflatable oil booms, skimming systems, related support equipment and personnel to support clean-up efforts for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Deepwater Horizon was an ultra-deepwater oil rig that sank April 22, causing a massive oil spill threatening the U.S. Gulf Coast. The material sent is being staged at various ports and Naval bases along the Gulf Coast. More than 1,000 personnel are involved in the response effort both on and off shore with additional resources being mobilized as needed.
