Image title | On November 14, in celebration of 100 years of Naval Aviation, Norfolk Naval Shipyard helped to build a platform which launched the first airplane from a warship in 1910. This picture shows a floating crane, from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, as it lifts Eugene B. Ely's Curtiss pusher airplane to the deck of USS Birmingham (Scout Cruiser # 2). This was shortly before the flight. Birmingham is partially visible at left, behind the crane. The photograph is compliments of the U.S. Naval Historical Center Photograph. |
