English: Ugyenling monastery has been the celebrated birthplace of the Sixth Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso. The evidence of miraculous deeds to the sixth Dalai Lama, Tsayang Gyatso, can be seen even today. One of the legends is plantation of walking stick by the Sixth Dalai Lama. It is told that, at time of leaving for Tibet, he planted his walking stick into the ground just inside the monastery gate and it finally grew into a giant oak tree. He prophesied he would once again visit Tawang when all the three trunks that would grow of it would attain equal height. Indeed, it happened in 1959 when the great 14th Dalai Lama, on his way to exile visited here.
