DescriptionUlsterbus charabanc 5 "Endeavour" (CZ 1988) modified 1989 Mercedes Benz 709D, Port Rush, 23 July 2008.jpg |
English: Ulsterbus bus No. 5, Endeavour, (reg. CZ 1988), pictured here in Portrush, County Antrim, where it is used on tourist services. Unique in the fleet, it's a modified minibus made to look like an old style charabanc.
The original underlying chassis was new to Ulsterbus in May 1989 as a standard service bus, fleet no. 840, (reg. NXI 6840), a 25 seat Mercedez-Benz 709D minibus with Wrightbus bodywork. After 840 was destroyed by arson, its chassis was recovered and fitted with this unique charabanc style body complete with soft top roof over the passenger seating area. It was built by Ulsterbus at their Duncrue Street works, emerging in November 1994. The conversion retained the original capacity of 25 seats. It emerged from the works having been renumbered 5 and re-registered with the Belfast plate CZ 1988. It intially wore a blue livery with gold relief, with the name applied as The Endeavour. By June 2006, it was based at Coleraine depot in County Londonderry. Having at some point been allocated to the Flexibus fleet in Belfast, in June 2006 it was transferred back to Ulsterbus, who put it into service in a new maroon livery, renamed simply Endeavour. By May 2010 it had moved from Coleraine depot to Larne depot in County Antrim. It was still listed in the active fleet, based at Larne, as of November 2011. |
