Summary edit

Description
English: United Presbyterian Church of Hornell, 150 Main Street, Hornell, New York, June 2021. A would-be contributing property to the Hornell Downtown Historic District that's proposed for the National Register of Historic Places, First Presbyterian is in one sense the oldest building in downtown Hornell: the original wood-framed Greek Revival chapel erected in 1850 still exists and constitutes the core of what's today the worship sanctuary, though almost all of what's seen in this photograph is the product of a c. 1915 expansion that's of a wholly different architectural style, namely the Late Gothic Revival. Here we see detailing that's relatively restrained yet still lends the design a great deal of charm: a large stained-glass window facing Main Street with trefoil patterns in the tracery near its top and a cast-stone window hood above; ruggedly textured exterior walls of randomly coursed ashlar lent extra support by simple stepped buttresses; a pair of stout towers flanking the façade, similarly dimensioned but but identical, with pairs and trios of louvered openings at the belfry sandwiched between narrow stone belt courses; the roof flat, spireless, and crowned with crenellated parapets. The church was founded in 1832 and originally named First Presbyterian.
