DescriptionUpshot-Knothole Encore 003.jpg | Nevada Test Site, May 8, 1953, Upshot-Knothole Encore -- Atomic troops are shown crouching in their trenches just prior to the detonation of the eighth atomic detonation in the Spring 1953 series at the Nevada Proving Grounds. One soldier is shown with a handkerchief tied over his face to protect himself from the large quantities of dust and dirt that will be thrown into the trench as the blast from the explosion passes overhead. Approximately 3,500 troops from all parts of the country were formed into Battalion Combat teams who "attacked" through the area directly under the blast. In addition, the test was witnessed by approximately 600 high ranking military officers and congressmen. Participation by military personnel is designed to indoctrinate troops in atomic weapons in order that they will know how to protect themselves and their equipment in event of an enemy atomic attack in combat situations. | ||||
