Description
English: The Antonine inscription is placed upside-down by the relieving arch (above the lintel)[1] of the Double Gate, the Southern Wall. It came from the Roman statue of Emperor Antoninus Pius that the Bordeaux Pilgrim saw on the Temple Mount, Aelia Capitolina, in 333.
“For Titus Aelius Hadrianus Antoninus Pius, father of his country, pontifex, augur: [a statue was erected] by the decision of the decurions (city councillors) at public expense.”[2]
