DescriptionUsher Hall, Lothian Road - geograph.org.uk - 1615835.jpg |
English: Usher Hall, Lothian Road The Usher Hall, opened in 1914, is, like the McEwan Hall, another Edinburgh building that owes its existence to a brewer's or distiller's benefaction. Ironically, it was not equipped with a refreshments bar, believed to be a result of Andrew Usher's strongly held temperance views. It has hosted many great conductors, orchestras and concert performers over the years; and has also witnessed memorable events, such as the recruitment rally that induced several Heart of Midlothian F.C. players to enlist in the Great War and a British Union of Fascists rally at which Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts caused a street riot by ejecting hecklers. Shakespeares Bar on the corner is a favourite 'watering-hole' for drouthy musicians during intervals and after concerts.
