AmericanSmelting & Refining Co., 750 men; Highland Boy, orUtah Con., 250 men; United States, 500 men; Bing-ham Con., 250 men; all being in Salt Lake valley.The Yampa, at Bingham, 100 men, the Majestic atMilford, 125 men and the Utah Eastern & CopperCo. in Washington county, 40 men. Improvements,additions and new plants are under way, many to becompleted in 1905, that will increase the present ca-pacity more than five fold. Closely allied with thesmelting industry are the milling propositions forhandling gold ores and for concentration. Of theseevery camp boasts from one to a half dozen and thedemand for suitable treatment processes is neverfully satisfied. 18

Thecoal belt enters Utah south of Evanston,Wyo., and continues in a zig-zag course un-til it leaves the state at the southwestern corner ofWashington county. It is over 600 miles long, fromten to 25 miles wide and covers many thousandsquare miles of land. Coal is mined in Carbon, Sum-mit, Grand, Sanpete, Emery and Uintah counties.The output of coal up to 1885 was 1,806,120 tons; to1894, 4,577,546 tons and up to 1904, 13,376,980 tons.Carbon county produces 95 per cent of the coal ofthe state. Utah produces more coal than is con-sumed by the people of the State. In 1903 343>3I4tons were imported and 817,954 tons exported.
