area of84,790 square miles. It is mountainous throughout,but is traversed from north to south by a chain ofvalleys of marvelous fertility. The altitude variesfrom 4,200 feet above sea level at the surface of SaltLake to 12,000 feet at the summits of the Wasatchrange. The average elevation of Salt Lake City is4,300 feet, a little lower than Denver. The greatvariation in altitude accounts for the diversifiedcrops that can be produced in different sections. Climate.—Spring in Utah begins in March, sum-mer in June and autumn weather frequently lingersuntil January. In 1903, a typical year, there were,according to the United States Weather Bureau, 201cloudless days, 92 days partly cloudy and 72 cloudy.Observations taken at Salt Lake City for a periodof five years from 1891 to 1895 show an averagemaximum temperature of 98 and an average mini-mum temperature of .4 of a degree above zero. The average precipitation of moisture, accord-ing to records kept at 12 stations in all parts ofUtah during periods varying from 4 to 30 years, is11.96 inches. These stations, however, are all inthe valleys where the precipitation is less than halfthe precipitation on the mountains where sufficientmoisture falls to support a good growth of timberand grass. Health and Disease.—Utahs climate is a foe tobacteria and disease. Many resident physiciansdoubt if there has ever been developed here a pri-mary case of tuberculosis. The bulletin of the De-partment of Health gives the death rate of Salt LakeCity at 12.17 per 1,000 per year. Of 137 cities of theUnited States but 20 have a death rate as low,or low-er.
