The total valuation of school property is$3.534777-2-42- In 1904 the teaching force numbered1737 and there were 91,682 children of school age.The average salary of male teachers is $74.84 amonth, and of female teachers $52.60. All of theschools have modern equipment. Text books arefurnished free by the state. There are high schoolsin all of the cities and larger towns, whose certi-ficates are accepted at the State University and atthe various academies. The University of Utah isone of the most complete and best equipped in theWest. It includes a school of arts and sciences,State school of Mines and State Normal school.It attracts students from many near by states andfrom as far East as the Mississippi river. Typical Grade School Buildings in Salt Lake. of Utahs schools was recognized at the St. LouisExposition in 1904 when the Salt Lake commonschools received a gold medal, the second highestaward; the Salt Lake High school received a silvermedal, standing third; the University of Utah train-ing school received a gold medal; the State Normalschool a silver medal; the Utah county publicschools a bronze medal; the Indian Industrial schoola bronze medal. The grand prize, the highestaward given in the United States, went to theadmirable school for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind atOgden. Sectarian Schools.—The Mormon church hasendowed three universities and several academies.The Latter-day Saints University, which includesnormal, academic and business departments, oc-cupies three buildings opposite the Temple in SaltLake City.
