Description

This Variable Hawk on Bertha's Beach had just downed dinner for the day. It was struggling to fly with its large prey, so stopped and is sitting on top of the recently deceased gull. A large and majestic bird, I was able to get within 10 meters without any attention being paid to me.

Bertha's Beach is a designated Important Bird Area (IBA) of 3,300 hectares of coastal wetlands. The beach is privately owned and can be accessed on a few of the registered tours on the Island, and also by a limited number of daily visitors from the nearby Mount Pleasant camp.
