Summary edit

Description
English: Variegated Meadowhawk (Sympetrum corruptum), Male, Colorado Desert, California

This is one of California's most common and widespread dragonflies. They're about 1.5 to 2 inches long.

Most of these guys would fly away when I got within 8 feet from them, but this one let me get really close. The photo was shot at about 5 feet (minimum focus distance for the 300mm).
