Summary edit

Description
English: The Vaux Barn, 1119 Genesee Street at Mills Street, Buffalo, New York, January 2021. Though tucked away in an inconspicuous location and looking quite the worse for wear, the building seen here is immensely historically important as the only remaining Calvert Vaux-designed building from the original iteration of Buffalo's Olmsted park and parkway system. Built in 1876, the barn was originally located on the grounds of Martin Luther King Jr. Park (then known as The Parade), where it probably served as a stable and carriage house, and appears to have been moved to its present location around 1896. However, apart from its new site, the building retains remarkable historic integrity and still serves as a good representative example of the Stick-style designs favored by Vaux, with the half-timbering and chamfered bracing on the façade. The not-for-profit Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy plans to eventually move the building back to its original site where it will be incorporated into the greenhouse complex at the east end of the park, though the cost estimate of $500,000 for the project makes it unclear when this will occur.
