Description
English: On 13 February 2021, a gas-carrying truck exploded in Islam Qala, in Afghanistan's western province of Herat, at a border post with Iran. It is still not known what caused the tanker to explode and set fire to more than 100 other nearby fuel tankers. A total of 500 vehicles ended up being destroyed by flames, while at least 60 people were injured, and power supply was disrupted. Local authorities estimate that the incident caused 50 millions of dollars in damages. This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 on 14 February 2021, shows that, one day after the explosion, the fires (red hot spots) continued to burn. With a revisit time of 5 days on average at the equator, the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites deliver free and open data that can be used to monitor human activities around the world.
