sh.She was very fond of play; she played basset, reversis, ombre,and sometimes a little primero; but she never won becauseshe did not know how to play. She had such an affection forthe king that she used to watch his eyes to do whatevermight be agreeable to him; if he only looked at her kindlyshe was in good spirits for the rest of the day. She was-very glad when the king quitted his mistresses for her, anddisplayed so much satisfaction that it was commonly re-marked. She had no objection to being joked upon this sub-ject, and upon such occasions used to laugh and wink andrub her little hands. . . . The king, nevertheless, had alwaysgreat consideration for her, and made his mistresses treat herwith all becoming respect. He loved her for her virtue, andfor the sincere affection she bore to him, notwithstanding hisinfidelity. He was much affected at her death. . . . Thequeen died of an abscess under her arm. Queen of France The State Apartments of the Queen had her blooded; this drove in the abscess, the disorder at-tacked her internally, and an emetic, which was administeredafter her bleeding, had the effect of killing the queen. * The body of Marie Therese lay in state in this salon, andin the Gazette we find the official ceremony in detail: Onthe 31st of July the corpse of the queen was opened andembalmed, and they took from it the heart and the entrails.The heart was embalmed and inclosed in a silver case uponwhich was this inscription: This is the heart of MarieTherese, Infanta of Spain, wife of Louis le Grand, XIV ofthe name; she died on the 30th of July, 1683. The entrailswere also embalmed and placed in an urn. The body, afterhaving been embalmed and clad in the dress of St. Francoisby the queens women, was laid in a leaden coffin, on whichthey placed this inscription: This is the body of the very high,very excellent, and very powerful prince
