Handwritten on negative jacket: [on one copy] July-August 1899. Vic Penberthy at his cabin, Denny Creek. Snoqualmie Pass, West side. Aiming sharpes single shot rifle. Made this picture when Grandpa Denny was supervising repair of Old Snoqualmie Pass Road between Lake Keechelus south end to foot of Grouse Ridge. [on second copy] 1899. Old Gold Creek Series. Vic Penberthy at his cabin, 26 Mile Crossing (Denny Creek) aiming old single shot rifle. Vic was a 6'4" man and straight as a ruler. A tree fell across his cabin and he just cut it out of the way and that was that. Made this photo when we were working on Old Snoqualmie Pass wagon road. It was a rough one and we started at Yakima River - Lake Keechelus and went to foot of Grouse Ridge near North Bend. (The cabin's site is now a Ranger Station.) Vic Penberthy died at Carmack Mines about to or three miles west of here. Carmack was the man who discovered gold in Alaska that started the Big Gold Rush up there in 1898.
